Quinto Orazio Flacco was 28 years old when, in 37 a.C., in the company of Mecenate and Cocceo, he made the trip from Rome to Brindisi, on a diplomatic mission. The poet told the experience of that journey in a satire, the fifth of Saturae's first book, better known as Iter Brundisinum.
The Via Traiana is a detour on the coast of the Via Appia Antica, the main Roman road that connected Rome to Brindisi the most important port for Greece and the Orient in antiquity, built by the emperor Trajan in the second century. d. C. with excellent building techniques that alternate paved city streets with large chianche and gravel roads for the extra-urban area. On a pre-existing local messapic route, it was an important way also for the marketing of olive oil to northern Italy and Europe. In the course of time, the usual route of Salento is the first on which the milestones appeared, the first directions: raised pavements and pylons signaled the distance from Benevento to Brindisi while lookout towers and post stations guaranteed communications and commercial traffic.
Its importance is confirmed by the nickname with which the Romans called it: regina viarum.
We therefore propose to the modern traveler to try to retrace with us the journey of these ancient travelers along the famous way, where we will see the still visible remains of the ancient road, we will tell how the Salento were moving in historical times and visit the settlements before the period Roman between ancient olive groves and carobs, blades and farms. An unmissable stop is the Dolmen of Montalbano.
