Description
Umbra Forest is one of the largest and intact forests (about 12 thousand hectares) in Europe. It is situated north east of Gargano, between the towns of Monte Sant'Angelo, Vico del Gargano, Vieste and Carpino. There are numerous species of trees and shrubs of this vast wilderness, among these the beech, which here reaches considerable heights and can grow at altitudes quite unusual (300 m, beech depressed), but also the hornbeams, holm oaks, Oaks, maples, and thousand-year-old yew-trees. The fauna is also well represented with several species of birds (woodpeckers, goshawks, buzzards, Blackbirds, Jays ect) and mammals (wild boars, wolves, roe deer, wild cats, Martens, weasels etc.). There are also amphibians (frogs, tree frogs, toads, newts), reptiles, and many species of insects.
This is one of the most beautiful paths of the Umbra Forest. It starts near the County Road 528 which is directed towards Vico del Gargano (km. 17) at the barracks Sfilzi. The trail starts to the right of the Carpinosa Valley in a scenario characterised by giant beech trees and a shady undergrowth covered by butcher's broom and hollies.
In Carpinosa Valley there is nature reserve Sfilzi inside which is worth visiting the homonymous fountain: it is a large rectangular tank filled with water topped by a thick vegetation of ferns. Inside living the great crested newt and the newt italic. This area is also frequented by wild boars, foxes, roe deer and woodpeckers. The path ends at the barracks Caritate near the provincial road for Vieste.

Clothing to wear for this hike should be comfortable and appropriate for the current season. In particular, a so-called "onion" clothing allows you to cover you in case of cold and discover when the temperatures rise. Always wear long pants and long-sleeved shirts to avoid insect bites and thorns of the bushes. The colors of the clothes should never be too gaudy, but similar to the colors of the environment you are pursuing. Always wear shoes and socks hiking boots are required for a comfortable and safe driving. Always carry water. I also recommend a good hiking backpack, telescopic poles, caps and sunglasses, sunscreen, camera, binoculars, garbage bag, sandwiches, snacks or dried fruit. To avoid salty foods, alcohol and smoking. The council finally to bring drugs in case you are suffering from allergies or intolerance to various substances.
